Island to host British-Irish Council summit
The Isle of Man will host the fifteenth summit meeting of the
British-Irish Council next month (December).
It will be held in Douglas on Monday, December 13, and will focus on the
global economic outlook.
Those in attendance will include senior poilticians from the British and
Irish governments, devolved institutions and the Crown dependencies.
The British-Irish Council was formed in 1999 under the terms of the Good
Friday peace agreement, and is the only international forum comprising
the governments of the United Kingdom, the Irish Republic, Northern
Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
It is seen as playing an important role in developing positive links
between member countries, and is a forum for consultation and
co-operation on matters of common interest.
The most recent summit meeting took place in Guernsey in June, and the
Isle of Man previously hosted the British-Irish Council in 2005.
Another topic down for discussion next month is 'digital inclusion',
which is a 'work stream', led by the Isle of Man.
'Digital inclusion' is described by PC Magazine as 'the incorporation of
information techniques into the community, in order to promote education
and improve the quality of life'.
Chief Minister Tony Brown says the Council has always been a valuable
forum for the Isle of Man, allowing it to take its place among the
governments of the British Isles, and discuss matters of mutual interest
at the highest level.
