[GAELIC-L] BBC ALBA air Astra

'Dè tha ceàrr?

For years now, I have been enjoying clear and true BBC ALBA reception
via the Astra satellite service. However, recently BBC ALBA has
seemingly become unavailable — seemingly, because I first took that to
be due to storms, etc. — all I get now is a high-pitched scream and the
letters ETV 3 floating across the screen on the channel named BBC ALBA.
Taking this to mean I should redirect my search to ETV 3, I did so, only
to be met with total silence and a black screen.

I'll be very grateful to anyone who provides a logical explanation and a
fix to go with it.

Definitely an odd one here. The station Ident ‘E TV 3’ is Ethiopian
Television (as far as I know).

It sounds very like the signal is coming in on top of the BBC Alba one – now
how or why it should happen at the frequencies used for Satellite is a
mystery (the frequencies are too high for Sporadic E )

For those who aren’t that technical, Sporadic E normally occurs on VHF
signals (we used to get that every summer when I worked with a well-known TV
rental company in Co Clare – it was that bad that we were able to set up TVs
on a Wednesday when the Maghera transmitter was closed down using test cards
from Sweden, Spain, etc)

It’s possible the Ethiopian transponder has drifted in frequency and is
coming in on top of the Astra one - it’s carried on Badr 4 and Arabsat 5C
but the interference is more likely to be from the Badr bird as it also
operates in the Ku band (as does Astra)

The footprint for Badrd can be seen here:

Mmm, is ait sin, ach is a mhalairt de scéal agamsa é.

I used to have good BBC Alba reception on Astra 29 Freesat, but then had many months of no recognisable reception - I think the prompt was "no signal", but in the past 1-2 weeks it's back. I get it in Limerick, Ireland, and use the 3/80 frequency. I presume this refers to subdivisions of the satellite(s), with differing frequencies. I used to be fixed to 26/80, but this got useless for me. I hope this is slightly useful - where are you based?

A Mharion,

The above means that BBC ALBA changed channel frequency on 26 October last year. You probably haven't seen it since then. It's now transmitting on 10818 with V(vertical) polarity. You need to reprogram your receiver. I only know how to do this for the freeview Satboxes as I don't have a Skybox myself. However, I would imagine it's quite simple if not automated with an update.
