Subject: comment: "Minister wants US to Experience Northern Ireland"

Esteemed Editor:

I read with interest of Tourism Minister Arlene Foster’s announcement of
the upcoming event, “Experience Northern Ireland — Titanic & More” here
in New York. Such an event is always welcomed here and I wish it great
success.

However, after reading the Minister’s announcement on her party’s
website, I am dismayed to see that no Irish language organisation listed
either as a “strategic partner” or an “industry representative”.

Indeed, no mention is made of Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter, the
Cultúrlann, the McCracken Cultural Society, An Droichead, Raidio Fáilte
or Derry’s new Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

I, for one, would enjoy seeing Blue Eagle Production's “Fair Faa Ye”, as
Ulster Scots culture and language interest me. Yet, I fail to
understand why no Irish-language presentation is mentioned in the daily
performance schedule.

The Irish-language movement in New York is older than 135 years and,
indeed, may currently be enjoying one it its stronger phases.

There is intense interest in the Irish language in this City, which in
no way is limited to “Irish”-Americans. We enjoy a weekly
Irish-language radio broadcast from the Bronx each weekend, lectures in
and about the language in practically every Borough, classes, social
gatherings, conversational circles, and a quarterly book club, which,
incidentally will meet this Saturday, directly across the East River and
mere three-minute subway ride from the site of the Ministry’s exhibit.

We New Yorkers are a curious lot and it is a mistake to sell us short,
just as it is to sell Northern Ireland and its Irish-language
communities short.

Respectfully yours,

Well, considering that particular party has a very prominent member who once referred to Irish as a 'leprechaun language' - I'm not in the least surprised
